DOMINIQUE (1893-1994) Point Lobos 1951, California Plein Air Oil Point Lobos is a fine example of California plein air painting by listed American Impressionist, John A. Dominique (1893-1994). The piece is painted on canvas laid down on board and is in excellent condition. Daubs of paint loosely applied with a brush and palette knife give it a wonderful painterly quality. In the lower right the signature and date of 1951 were scratched into the wet paint. The canvas measures 12" x 16" and it is framed as shown with vintage gold moulding giving the painting an approximate overall size of 16" x 20". John A. Dominique (1893-1994) devoted his entire life to the development of his artistic expression. Living to the age of one hundred he persisted in creating art despite being legally blind for the last 25 years of his life. Dominique studied under many major California artists including Van Sloun, Cooper, Hansen and Borg. His work has been featured in several well regarded art publications as well as being listed in most American art reference books including Artists in California 1786-1940, by Hughes, Who Was Who in American Art, Artists of the Pacific Northwest: A Biographical Dictionary, 1600-1970 and Oregon Painters: The First Hundred Years (1859-1959).
