Description: Paradise Regain’d ... To Which Is Added, Samson Agonistes and Poems upon Several Occasions: With a Tractate of Education Author: Milton, John Title: Paradise Regain’d ... To Which Is Added, Samson Agonistes and Poems upon Several Occasions: With a Tractate of Education Publication: London, London, printed for J. and R. Tonson; and for C. Hitch and L. Hawes, R. Ware, C. Corbet, J. Brindley, P. Davey, and B. Law. 1756 Edition: Early Edition.. Description: Hardcover. (2 blank leaves, [i-vi], 352 pp.,, 3/4 calf binding and pebbled green cloth over boards; 6 compartments, including title, to spine, bordered (including covers) and lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; marbled edges all around. 16mo (16.5 cm. tall). Book condition: shelf wear to extremities focused on the length of the spine, corners, and to a lesser degree spine ends. Binding super tight, text block completely without flaw, no foxing, staining, or toning. This 1756 edition is super rare, a ghost; Wordcat shows zero institutional holdings, and of the hundreds of Paradise Regain'd copies listed by the trade (as of 9/30/2024), there are exactly zero 1756 editions offered. Our impression is that while this is indeed a rare edition, its rarity is apparently inexplicable and of generally no consequence as it relates to anything other than, well, its rarity! Ex libris Earl Cornwallis, with engraved bookplate to front pastedown. This is most is likely James Mann, the 5th Earl Cornwallis, (1778-1852). The family motto is featured below the the two rampant stags: "Per Ardua Stabilis" (Steady in Difficulties). Artist: Roberto Bellarmino (1562-1641). If anything, this armorial bookplate is even more uncommon then the aforementioned 1756 edition of "Paradise Regain'd". The bookplate can only be described as in fine condition. (Bookplate collectors: we are open to selling the bookplate alone). Very Good+ / Fine. Seller ID: 005771 Subject: Poetry Dubois Rare Books Items are 100% guaranteed.
