Description: King Alfred Penny, museum reproduction coin Moneyer IILEVINE London, 886-99. Exact to the original coin it was cast from which was a well-struck example of the most significant coin from the Anglo-Saxon King Alfred’s reign – commemorating Alfred’s ‘conquest’ or reoccupation of the important site of London which had been occupied by Vikings during the 870's. The penny is in many ways a triumphant coin, celebrating Alfredian control of London and symbolising his defeat of the Vikings. The coin also celebrates the physical renewal of London, which was of prime importance for Mercia, Wessex, and the Vikings at the time. Obv: Diademed portrait bust of Alfred right. Text around AELFRED REX. Rev: Londonia monogram, triangle of three pellets top and bottom, cross pattee to the left and cross to the right. Text above IILEVINE MONETA.
