Lily By Whiting Sterling Silver set for 12, 82 pieces + original pearl knives

Description: A fine early set of Lily pattern flatware made by Whiting manufacturing company circa 1902-1904. Monogramed: with an old English A, Except for the large dinner forks and 2 of the Tablespoons. Marked: see Image (this is the earliest marked used on Lily pattern flatware) some of the pieces have retailer's marks Weight: 106 troy ounces (excluding knives) 12 dinner forks. 7 5/8'12 luncheon forks 6 3/4 "18 tea spoons. 5 3/4 "12 salad forks 6 1/4"12 butter knives. 5 3/4 "12 cock tail forks. 5 7/8"12 dinner knives with pearl handles and silver plated carbon steel blades 9 1/4 " 4 table spoons. 8 1/4" This set is interesting for several reasons. First, it has pearl handle knives, which were generally used in the 19th century.Sterling handled knives started to appear around the 1880s (Gorham introduced their first silver handled knives in the 1880) and many people continued to preferred to use the pearl handle knives which were traditionally used in the United states into the early 20th century.Second, some of the dinner forks are marked with an E in addition to the standard marks. At the time this set was made manufacturers made place pieces in several weights. I only know the Gorham weight marks. Gorham stamped E on extra heavy. pieces. 6 of the forks weigh 2.3 oz the other 6 vary from 1.9 to 2.2Third, 2 of the pieces are engraved on the back 1902 or 1904 which along with the Pearl handled knives indicates that this must be one of the first sets made in this pattern.
