Description: Lot/Set of 4: Hispanic American series: Notes & Monographs, Edited by William Belmont Parker. (x4) Hardcover, w/ original jackets. (NY & London) The Hispanic Society of America, 1920 - 1921; 18mo. Approx. Size of Books: 6.5" x 4.5" x 1.25" Note that these are four (4) original hardcover volumes of a series of unknown final count, published ca. 1920 / 21 by The Hispanic Society of America. Due to the unorthodox arrangements in publication and printing (manufacture) that pertained during the series' production, publication dates, publisher, and place of publication / manufacture vary among even these four volumes. Nevertheless, these volumes offer invaluable first-hand, contemporaneous information about notable and influential living individuals in each of their respective countries in the 1920s, as these volumes present "Hispanic Notes & Mongraphs; Essays, Studies, and Brief Biographies..." of scores of living contemporaries from each of the four nations represented in these volumes. As noted by the original dust jackets, these books comprise "A Biographical Dictionary" or "'Who's Who' of" the countries of Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay in the early 20th Century, and are of great historical and cultural value due to the nature and extent of their contents. Titles Include:[(Book # in Series) Title (Publisher, Date; Notes)] (Book #3) Bolivians of To-Day (Hispanic Society, c/o G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1920; Printed: Santiago)(Book #5) Argentines of To-Day (Hispanic Society, 1920; "Vol." 1 of 2 only; Printed: Buenos Aires)(Book #6) Paraguayans of To-Day (Hispanic Society, 1921; Printed: London)(Book #7) Uruguayans of To-Day (Hispanic Society, 1921; Printed: London) CONDITION is VERY GOOD to NEAR FINE for all. Original dust jackets are intact and remain in good or better condition, with only moderate chipping / tearing, with exception of Argentines, which has long tear from top of rear jacket panel that has been taped from the inside and is holding; all others evince only modest damage, primarily at extremities, corners, and spines, but still remain in nearly-complete, good or better condition. Very little loss is evident to any original text on jacket panels; almost all remains present and legible. Volumes appear unmarked within and appear to be in very good or better condition overall (Bolivians and Paraguayans both exhibit modest evidence of past dampstaining, just at fore-edges of covers -- see photos -- but neither appear to have had any effect on text block). All books do evince considerable shelfwear and signs of use / handling externally, all bear small numerical stamps in black ink to top and bottom edges of text blocks (but no other markings anywhere, within or without, and do not appear to be ex-library copies), and an occasional leaf may be starting at the gutter (e.g., the frontispiece in Bolivians), but no leaves appear to be free & laid in, nor any missing, nor any to be in such poor condition as to adversely affect readability. Bindings are generally sound and square, though quite delicate from age, and text blocks all appear to be complete and legible. Overall, these are four very suitable reading/reference copies of a rare and valuable series. Please inspect photos carefully; message with any inquiries.
