Margaret Thatcher writes for the first time of her life up to her dramatic 1979 election victory at which she became the first woman Prime Minister of England. A prequel to ‘The Downing Street Years’, and arguably a more gripping book than its predecessor, she writes candidly about the formation of her character and values, and the experiences that propelled her to the very top in a man's world. Beginning with a touching account of her upbringing in Grantham, Lincolnshire, she goes on to describe her Oxford years, marriage to Denis, and entry into Parliament at a time when there were no more than a handful of women MPs. Rising through the ranks to Education Secretary and then Leader of the Opposition, she led the Conservative Party to a historic victory in the 1979 general election, becoming Britain's first female prime minister. She writes explicitly about her feelings towards Ted Heath as she sat uncomfortably in his Cabinets, about her rethinking of conservatism under the inspiration of Keith Joseph, about the Winter of Discontent, the fall of the Labour Callaghan Government, and the country she inherited. “The economics had gone wrong because something else had gone wrong spiritually and philosophically. The economic crisis was a crisis of the spirit of the nation.” All this would be quite sufficient to make a riveting memoir, but this book has a Part Two.
