To commemorate this, all of his recordings for Deutsche Grammophon (1970-2002) and Argo (1992-1995) will be released together for the first time. 14-CD box set. Limited edition. Michael Tilson Thomas emerged on the international stage in the early 1970s, releasing albums of Tchaikovsky, Debussy, and American music for Deutsche Grammophon. Although his contract was short-lived, he also demonstrated his outstanding piano skills by performing Debussy sonatas with key members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He then became music director of the London Symphony Orchestra and produced two Bernstein albums for Deutsche Grammophon again. On the Town and Airs and Barcarolle feature Bernstein's longtime close collaborators Frederica von Stade and Thomas Hampson, while he has recorded concertos with pianist Jean-Marc Luisada and cellist Mischa Maisky that are characteristically insightful and sympathetic. Elvis Costello's Il Sogno (the ballet score for A Midsummer Night's Dream) highlights Tilson Thomas's ability to mold the most diverse styles. CDs 12-14 feature Tilson Thomas' recordings for the Argo label, including a rollicking album of Latin American dances (Tangazo), a sensuous collection of orchestral music by Morton Feldman, and an album dedicated to Tilson Thomas's college teacher, composer Ingolf Dahl. The New World Symphony Orchestra, which will be performing with the band, was founded by Tilson Thomas in 1987 with the aim of nurturing the careers of young classical musicians, but quickly gained an international reputation.
