The original casters have been replaced, and one screw is missing from the frame; however, this does not impact the piece’s structural integrity or sturdiness. Designer Richard Young, Merrow Associates co founder (along with engineers Percy Wyett and Peter Weeks), trained as a cabinet maker as well as formerly studying at the Royal College of Art and later at the Royal Art Academy Copenhagen. The company had the idiom ‘Modern Classic’ and set out to prove that their British workmanship could rival their Scandinavian counterparts. Richard Young studied at the RCA in London, where he graduated at the top of his class. He subsequently won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen with the renowned Ole Wanscher. In the early 1960s he was working as a staff designer for G Plan and created some beautiful designs, although not all were as successful as expected.Merrow's coveted pieces were sold in Harrods, Heals, and Oscar Wollens, among other outlets in the UK, and in other high-end showrooms in the US, Germany, France and Benelux. His unique designs were exhibited in the residential market, with one of his greatest successes being the design of the famous Ronnie Corbett chair. After forty years, James Young was finally able to pick up where his father left off and relaunched Merrow Associates in 2020 with his partner and fellow designer Mike Trott. The pair has recommissioned selected heritage pieces from the extensive vintage furniture catalog and developed "New Merrow" items to carry forward the history of Merrow Associates.
