Description: Use - Nagura are prep/correcting stones used with full-size sharpening stones (whetstones) to assist in sharpening knives, razors, chisels, planes, and other blades. - Nagura are used to: 1) create a sharpening slurry/paste on the working surface of whetsones, 2) clean glazed/"clogged" whetstones from trapped metal micro shavings and swarf, which inhibit sharpening, and 3) flatten the working surface which becomes convex (dished) with use. - By creating a cutting slurry, nagura aid in a uniform, better controlled sharpening movement by eliminating suction between the blade and the stone and resulting skipping action which can lead to deformed, micro chipped bevels. - Nagura also help to break down grit particles of the host stone into smaller, finer size elements. Like waterstones, naguras come in various grades of grit with a higher number denoting smaller particles and finer finish: ultra coarse: 120 - 240, coarse: 300 - 800, medium: 1000 - 3000, fine: 4000 - 7000, and ultra fine: 8000 - 12000. The grit range of waterstones and naguras should be matched - this will create homogeneous slurry, avoid contamination, and extend the life of waterstones and blades. --> Specifications Nagura Grit # Size Weight Application 150 (80 micron) 3.0" x 1.0" x 1.0" (75 x 25 x 25 mm) 3.1 oz (90 g) - good for fast stock removal - used for resurfacing/cleaning of whetstones - should be followed by a finer grit nagura 1000 (16 micron) 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25 mm) 3.7 oz (107 g) - universal purpose, softer nagura - excellent slurry formation - used on stones with grit 1000 - 8000 - made in Japan 3000 (6 micron) 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25 mm) 3.7 oz (107 g) - universal purpose, finer grit nagura - good slurry formation - used on stones with grit 3000 - 8000 - made in Japan 4000 (3 micron) 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25 mm) 3.7 oz (107 g) - finish grade, medium hard nagura - used for final edge refinement - used on stones with grit > 4000 - made in Japan 6000 (2.6 micron) 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25 mm) 3.7 oz (107 g) - fine finish grade, medium hard nagura - used for final edge refinement - used on stones with grit > 6000 - made in Japan 8000 (1.8 micron) 2.6" x 1.3" x 1.0" (65 x 33 x 25 mm) 3.7 oz (107 g) - fine finish grade, medium hard nagura - used for final edge refinement - used on stones with grit > 8000 - made in Japan 12000 (1.2 micron)(grit is approximate) 2.8" x 1.2" x 1.2" (70 x 30 x 30mm) 6.1 oz (175 g) - natural, medium hard "ocean blue" nagura - polished on all six sides, high degree of flatness - excellent formation of creamy slurry - used for fine edge refinement - does not require pre-soaking - used with stones with medium to fine grits, both synthetic and natural - quarried from a now closed underwater mine near South Tsushima Island, Japan 12000 (1.2 micron)(grit is approximate) 1.7" x 1.7" x 1.7" (45 x 45 x 45mm) 9.0 oz (255g) - natural, medium hard "ocean blue" nagura - polished on all six sides, high degree of flatness - excellent formation of creamy slurry - used for fine edge refinement - does not require pre-soaking - used with stones with medium to fine grits, both synthetic and natural - quarried from a now closed underwater mine near South Tsushima Island, Japan 1000 (16 micron) nagura dry powder 0.5 oz (14 g) - general purpose, medium hard powder - need to be mixed with water - can be used directly or to speed up slurry formation - used on stones with grit 1000 - 6000 - made in Germany Shipping - Ships from U.S. (free shipping within the continental U.S. ) - Worldwide shipping: to estimate the shipping cost for your country, please click on the "Shipping and payments" tab above.
