ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Ultra-Rare Long Out-of-Print (OOP) Vintage 1971 Museum Collotype Lithograph Depicting a Weathered Sea Captain Standing & Overlooking The Sea from a Rocky Coastal Cliff titled, “Captain Bill Bones”, from the famous 1911 book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Steveson, and after the original c1911 oil on canvas painting by the world-famous listed painter & illustrator, ‘Newell Convers Wyeth’ (American, 1882-1945) whose printed signature appears lower-left in the image corner, and whose painting is in the permanent collection of the now the Brandywine Museum of Art, previously known as the Brandywine River Museum, located in Chadds Ford, PA (Bequest of Gertrude Haskell Britton, 1992, Accession number: 92.16.1). About the Painting: The image is from Wyeth’s Treasure Island series of illustrations he did for Robert Louis Stevenson’s book of the same name. The quote that often accompanies this painting is: “All day he hung round the cove or upon the cliffs, with a brass telescope.” Alternate painting titles include: “Bill Bones on the Cliff” or simply “Captain Bones”. “In 1911, Scribner’s art editor Joseph Chapin offered N.C. Wyeth the opportunity to illustrate a new edition of Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure story. Within four months, Wyeth produced a set of 17 paintings that would ensure his reputation as one of the foremost illustrators of the period. Wyeth’s genius partly lay in his ability to envision the characters he depicted. His Bill Bones, for example, looks to be of flesh and blood, truly capable of the piratical life Stevenson wrote for him. This figure, silhouetted above a rugged, misty seacoast, is haunting. Wyeth kept detail to a minimum, but he knew which details, such as the brass telescope, the cockaded hat, the swirling cloak, and gleaming buttons and shoe buckles, would be most effective when the image was reduced to 6 ½ x 5 ¼ inches, the size of the book illustration. For generations of readers, this is the very image of Bill Bones that comes to mind when Stevenson’s famous character is mentioned.” (Quote excerpts from: Brandywine River Museum) Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s copyright, date, name & rights info, ‘© 1971 Brandywine River Museum—all rights reserved’, appears printed lower-left in the outer margin area just beneath the image; The auspices info, ‘Published under the auspices of the BRANDYWINE RIVER Conservancy of the Brandywine Inc.’, appears lower-left in the bottom outer margin corner; The artist’s name, title, book & author reference, magazine reference & date, medium, size and collection info, ‘N. C. Wyeth—Captain Bill Bones, from Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Scribner’s Illustrated Classics, 1911, (Medium: Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 inches), Collection of Mrs. Brigham Britton’, appears printed lower-middle; and the printing info, ‘Printed in U.S.A. by Triton Press Inc., N.Y.C.’, appears printed lower-right respectively. The Brandywine also used this image for their 1971 Wyeth family exhibition poster which was the same year the Museum opened to the public, which is now known as the Brandywine Museum of Art. The Collotype is on a nice heavier-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 34-11/16” x 27-7/8”, Image size is 29-3/4” x 24”. The Collotype is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade. This Collotype had been tucked away amongst other vintage lithos & prints since it was purchased by Meibohm Fine Arts and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its current never-framed condition. No Tears & no foxing evident! No real or significant damage at all on this beautiful piece with the tiny basically negligible exceptions of: Minimal very slight & small crescent-creases and a handful of tiny crinkle-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even that noticeable really and aren’t even really worth mentioning; Other extremely-minimal & very slight small creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas and in a few outer margin corners with some associated small dog-ear bends as well as ultra-minimal outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings scattered here & there—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Negligible/no real toning of the paper stock from age, especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This rare collotype has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a beauty! EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
