Despite being declared Caesar in 285 and Augustus in 286, his role remained subordinate to Diocletian. In 310, Maximian rebelled against Constantine in southern Gaul, falsely declaring Constantine's death in Arles. Fleeing to Massilia, he was captured by Constantine and stripped of his title for the last time. He was imprisoned and forced into suicide under questionable circumstances.
