Old 1892 style OWL DRUG bottle 5 inch tall w/EMBOSSED owl SAN FRANCISCO amethyst

Description: A 5 inch tall rectangular/oval-shaped nice PURPLE LAVENDAR AMETHYST color a SUN PURPLED bottle as they call it. This bottle was put up by TODCo = The Owl Drug Co. This the very FIRST STYLE of bottle that was used by the Owl Drug Co. with the embossed owl / trade mark on it. It is a tall slender bottle with rounded shoulders, more oval than rectangular. It has an animated owl embossed on it, almost like a cartoon character. It is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, and one of the few Owl Drug bottles that actually date from pre-1900. Many of these have the January 1892 date embossed on the base of them, the year that the Owl Drug Co. first opened up on Market Street in San Francisco- Bottle has tall slender elongated looking embossed Owl (1 wing) perched on a druggist's mortar, stirring a pestle. Mortar is embossed "TODCo". TODCo / TRADE MARK". TODCo stands for = "The Owl Drug Co." Condition: Bottle is in nice clean condition, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE see pictures to get the best idea of bottles appearance/condition. The base of many of them has an 1892 date on it, the very year that the Owl Drug Co. opened up for business at 1128 Market Street, San Francisco. They weren't used for very long in comparison to the more recent square rectangular bottles that are more commonly seen. These come in 10 sizes, from the 1/2 oz. up to the large 32 oz. full quart. This is the 4th size up, a 4 ounce bottle. They all have animated looking embossed birds on them that look more like cartoon characters than what one would expect to find as a professional trade mark for a national drug company, and they come with nearly a half dozen completely looking different owls on them. Then there is the deep amethyst color of this bottle. You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight? The beautiful purple amethyst color of this bottle is the result of being made with manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn naturally aqua-colored glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This bottle was passed through an industrial food sterilizer and the UV rays it puts out turned it the purple in short order. No matter if a bottle lies on a hillside in the sun for a century or is exposed to UV rays by another source, they all turn the same color of purple as it is all the same process taking place. The main thing is the age of the bottle as with few exceptions, only glass made before 1914 will turn purple.
