Description: Scarce fold-out color lithographed map of Africa, published as a supplement to the March 1909 edition of The National Geographic Magazine. The image area measures 51 x 39.3 cm [20" x 15½"] and is drawn on an approximate scale of 1:21,457,920. Details include completed and proposed railroads, caravan routes, steamship lines, telegraph and cable lines, and principal products, with color shading to locate gold fields, silver fields, and diamond fields. A separate color key identifies British, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Egyptian possessions, as well as independent territories and Congo State. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is trimmed to the neat line at the lower left. It folds to approximately 9" x 6" and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. The map was prepared especially for the National Geographic Society by the Matthews-Northrup Works, Buffalo, New York, and it is copyrighted © 1909. The Map Department of the National Geographic Society was founded in 1915, and before that date maps issued as supplements to the magazine were produced by other firms. Buy with confidence!
