Description: ORIGINAL WW2 US NAVY PEACOAT w/o INSIGNIA, SIZE 39 (estimated by measurement), NAMED to two former sailors, no moth damage, tears, or repairs. Lining is worn through in upper back area, but hanging strap is present. Corduroy lining to concealed external pockets is present; this was changed in postwar production coats. NAVAL CLOTHING FACTORY maker label is endorsed by original owner's name, which has been overwritten by a second owner. The label is also marked with original owner's rank, RT2C*, and there is faint evidence of a 2nd Class Petty Officer insignia removal from Left sleeve. On the same line as rank, the number "40" is written; this is probably the size estimate of the resale store where my source for the coat purchased it. Armpit to armpit distance is 22.5 inches, which results in a coat chest circumference of 45 inches. A size chart obtained from another seller, who sells copies or replicas of these coats, indicates that the actual chest circumference of the individual wearing the coat is about 6 inches less than the coat chest circumference. This is how I arrived at my size estimate of 39. These coats were designed to be worn as overcoats with extra room to allow freedom of movement. The sleeve measures 25 inches from top of shoulder to cuff. The back at midline measures 32 inches from base of collar to bottom hem. There are button holes on both sides of the lapels, enabling the coat to be worn in Male style (Left over Right) or Female style (Right over Left), although it was made long before the advent of unisex uniforms. Button on top Right front is missing, but it is difficult to see that one was ever sewn on there (you can feel its location however); another button at bottom of Right front row is also missing, but there is plenty of thread remnant marking its former location. Correct replacement buttons (2) are included with this sale. There are two transverse scuff marks in Left scapular (shoulder blade) area, and another on Left sleeve; I have not tried to have them cleaned. Considering it is 80+ years old, this coat is in exceptionally good condition; you could not purchase new today a coat of comparable quality material and workmanship for less than a few hundred dollars, and probably closer to a thousand. *According to US Navy's History website, RT was the WW2 Era abbreviation for Radio Technician, which was established in 1942-43, and transitioned to Electronics Technician (ET) in 1945. This substantiates my assertion that this particular coat was made and worn during WW2 Era.
