Description: Peerless PORTRAIT 12" (about 305mm) f/4 WETPLATE brass barrel lens. Made in USA by Morrison for Scovill Mfg. Co. Serial #251. Early brass lens. Non-coated glass. This lens will cover up to 8x10". Petzval type lens. Uses drop-in Waterhouse stops. Comes with 2 custom disks, hole diameter are 30mm and 34mm. Knob focusing on this lens!. Front filter diameter with hood is about 113mm. Rear lens diameter is about 90mm. Lens is about 165mm or 6.5" long. Weight is about 4.1lb. Has a retaining ring that is approx. 130mm in diameter. No retaining ring included! Requires 6x6" or larger lens board. Lens is in Mint- or 9.5 of 10 cosmetic condition. No dents or dings. This lens has been FULLY RESTORED by PHOTOLAZ. This lens barrel has been professionally refinished. Very clean glass that has been CLA'd. No cleaning marks, or scratches. NO SEPARATION. Original mounting ring is included with this lens, Includes original brass lens hood, 2 custom waterhouse aperture disks, and lens cap(fits inside). Nice clean example of an early hard to come by brass Scovill/Peerless brass portrait lens. Don't miss this rare fully restored 12" f/4 Peerless soft focus brass lens. ********************************************************************************************************************************While there is information and existing lenses to support that Richard Morrison was involved in making a few lenses for the Scovill Peerless Lens line (perhaps pre-1872) that feature radial drive mechanisms, the common Peerless Petzval Lens line that sold for about a 15 year period, starting in 1872, features a European inspired tangential drive and construction details (see image below). Also, note the Scovill article above mentions the Peerless is "of foreign manufacturer...," and "is used in many of the first-class galleries of Germany and France, and some in America..."
