Description: 25+ seeds per pack Phalaris elongata, a tall, erect perennial grass from Northeast Africa and limited ranges in Mediterranean islands. It reaches 3-7 feet and produces pretty flowers + seed-heads in May in California. Synonymous with the name Phalaris aquatica var. hirtiglumis. It is a perennial monocot of the Poaceae and native to Algeria, Tunisia. Morocco and Italy. It also grows in a few scattered locations in north central California because a university did livestock forage research and the Kolea grass escaped cultivation. P. elongata differs from normal P. aquatica due to its longer flowers/seedheads, less hair on the glumes and is not as ambitious to naturalize as many P. aquatica varieties are. It is a grass that has no recorded human use associated with it aside from humans using it to feed their livestock. CSIRO in Australia also developed the PERLA cultivar of Phalaris alongata which has naturalized near where it was sown. Until recently it was considered a subspecies of Phalaris aquatica(tuberosa/commutata), Phalaris tuberosa var. hirtiglumis and has since been reclassified as Phalaris elongata, thus sustaining itself as a unique species.
