It was struck on or about the given date of 1883 by the California Jewelry Company of San Francisco. Examples are known with the dates 1882 and 1883. The 1883 strikes seem to be the rarer of the two dates. This gold piece is smaller than a dime and weighs 0.18 grams. It is made of solid yellow gold. Gold fineness is believed to be around 12 Karat. Reports of similar issues tend to support this general fineness. We have one report stating that these issues are 90% gold. In any case, there is just a wee bit of gold in this tiny treasure!
