DESCRIPTION: For sale is this very scarce, early 20th century American antique, mid-western primitive, 'No-Name Shoes' ink stamped wood box shoe advertising shipping crate made by Harsh, Smith and Edmonds Shoe Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The wood box crate is an early one and a particularly scarce one, having been fashioned in the mid-west in the early 20th century. The box is a relic of Milwaukee, Wisconsin's early mercantile and manufacturing past, showing the transition from importing goods from the East Coast to indigenously producing them where Americans newly resided in growing numbers in the Mid-West, South and West. The box was never lacquered or varnished and still enjoys very vivid, clear, crisp and with nearly saturated color, ink stamped, stenciled sidewall typography. The ink stamping is especially decorative and being in two ink colors, red and black. The advertising shipping crate has early nailed corners, a wood plank floor and all wood construction. It has naturally aged, dry wood patina. Very handsome. CONDITION: Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
