Description: RARE lot Spanish silver coin, 2 Real - Makukin 1556-1598 Makukin, makukina (Spanish Macuquina, from Arabic “makuk” - “wrong”) is the name of a silver coin produced in Latin America during the Spanish Empire and corresponding, in general terms, to the weight standard and metal content of the European thaler, but not corresponding to the thaler in the form and quality of the minting due to the primitive manufacturing technology. When makukins arrived at European mints, having a high degree of silver content, they were melted and re-minted into full-fledged thalers. Initially, the term “makukin” was used to denote the most common denomination of the coin - 8 reais, corresponding to the European thaler. In modern numismatics, “makukin” is also understood as smaller denominations, in denominations of 1, 2, 4 and 8 reales, minted in South America under the guidance of the Spaniards, and having an “irregular” shape. The mintage of Makukin began in the New World during the reign of King Philip II of Spain (1556-1598). Makukins were made from 1572 to 1732. In Spanish America, the Makukin remained in circulation until the 70s of the 18th century, when, according to the decree of Charles III (1759-1788), they were withdrawn from circulation. During the reign of Charles II (1665-1700), gold makukins were also issued in denominations of 8, 4, 2 and 1 escudos. Macukins are found in large numbers on sunken Spanish ships that transported these coins from the New World to Europe and the Philippines.
