Description: This is a RARE, vintage 1960's art pottery rooster created by Giovanni DeSimone, handmade and hand painted. It is hand marked "DeSimone Italy" and "23-A, 203-B" on the bottom. It measures almost 10" in height, 9" in length and 5" in width and features bright, multicolored eye-catching decorations! His appreciation of primitivism and the artists of his time (Picasso, Matisse and Gauguin) heavily influenced his art. It is truly a collectible piece! GREAT TABLE CENTERPIECE! Giovanni DeSimone was born in 1930 in Palermo, Italy and after WWII he enrolled in the famed Istituto d'Arte per la Ceramica in Faenza. It was there he found his life's calling; pottery became his passion. After completing his studies, he and his family returned to Sicily. The Giovanni DeSimone ceramics studio began in the 1960's and produced both dinnerware and serving pieces as well as decorative tiles and larger panels. During his most prolific period, there was anywhere from four to six artisans who worked for him and helped with production. DeSimone passed away in 1991 but his legacy continues through his daughters who operate La Fabbrica della Ceramica still located in Palermo, Sicily. Each piece is individually handmade and handpainted. His brightly colored pottery is recognized and sought after by collectors. These pieces cannot be verified as food safe, so consider them decorative additions only.
