DIMENSIONS: The pedestal cups have a diameter of 2 7/8" and a height of 1 7/8". The capacity of the cups is 2 ounces. The scalloped saucers have a diameter of 4 3/4" and a height of 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: In 1879 in Upper Franconia, Bavaria at Erkersreuth Castle, Phillip Rosenthal (1855-1937) founded a porcelain decorating studio using blanks supplied by Zeidler. His business grew to the point that in 1891 he built his first factory to produce porcelain using kaolin imported from Bohemia. The current Rosenthal website states from 1907 the company marks each product with its full name, thus the brand name of Rosenthal is born in 1907. In his book entitled Rosenthal, Dieter Struss dates pieces as used after the 1943 time period by date ciphers containing Germany instead of Bavaria. During the period following World War II, Rosenthal porcelain was distributed in the United States by Rosenthal-Block China Corporation. This was a company founded by Joseph Block. Raymond Lowery's firm (which included Richard S Latham) designed tableware for the Corporation that would appeal to the American market. Probably best known was the Continental China line which was launched in 1952 and discontinued in 1975. The Ivory line was part of this. European manufactured porcelain for the American market was marked with a cartouche placed over the original production mark. The original mark is often visible beneath the cartouche when placed under a strong light. The source for this is the website collectrosenthal.
