Description: Sermons of Master John Calvin upon the Book of Job. Translated out of the French by Arthur Golding. Imprinted at London by Henrie Binneman, for Lucas Harison and George Bishop. Anno. 1574. 1/2 leather, marbled paper over boards. Period binding (perhaps ca. 1800), but not contemporary. Later end-papers. Pagination: title page, (34), 752. (next to last page is misprinted as "737"). Text block measures 13&1/2 x 9 inches. Period notes in margins towards the end of the book. STC 4444 (a2 catchword: "is, and"). Uncommon first edition of the English translation from the French. Fair condition: COVERS DETACHED; SPINE PARTIALLY MISSING; title page and next to leaf are soiled; title page and next several leaves and last leaf are ragged and tender along fore-edge; title page has been backed at sometime; least leaf has been repaired with some loss; first several leaves are detached; some water-staining. The text block is loosening and will no doubt NEED RESEWING. Despite flaws with the condition, this copy is complete with all printed pages.
