Description: A fascinating early stage design by Mexican artist Gunther Gerzso (1915-2000). The image depicts Gerzso's modernist concept for a stage set that was used at the Cleveland Playhouse in November 1936 for the play "Within the Gates" by Irish playwright Sean O'Casey. The last two photographs in the gallery are stills from the play with this stage set in place. These images are courtesy of the Kelvin Smith Library, Cleveland Play House Collection at Western Case Reserve University. The work is a mixed media painting (ink wash and crayon) and it is in its original period frame and mat. It is hand signed in the lower right "H. G. Gerzso"(first name Hans, he later dropped it) and titled "the soldier of bronze". Sight measurement is 7 x 8 1/2 inches, including mat & frame, the dimensions are 10 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. The paper shows typical age toning, otherwise in excellent original condition. In 2004, Artspace/Virginia Miller Galleries held a retrospective exhibitions of Gerzso's early works from his time Cleveland, the Miam Herald's review of the show, which included a number of his stage designs, can be accessed online here: https://virginiamiller.com/artists/GuntherGerzso/reviews3.htm
