Description: Sunken Treasure! Salvaged condition. The authentic Spanish silver piece of eight coin pictured is the one you will receive. The coin has a punched hole, which is actually part of the history of this coin. In the past, people would often put holes in their coins and string them together and sew them to the inside of the clothing, or even wear them. When this coin was salvaged, the hole was already in the coin so our silversmith plugged the hole with sterling silver. The coin is set into a handcrafted sterling silver pendant bezel with Skull and Crossbones. Your purchase will include the Certificate of Authenticity, a velvet treasure pouch, polishing cloth and gift box. This coin was recovered from the "Rimac" river in Lima, Peru. The river was the transportation from the silver mines in the New World to the ocean where they were then loaded onto the treasure galleons to be sent back to the Old World. For a period of several hundred years, residents and sailors would toss in a coin for safe passage or good fortune. Over the centuries, the mud banks of the river have captured and preserved thousands of Spanish silver coins. One side of the coin depicts the King of Spain, with the date and the other side of the coin features the "Pillars of Hercules" which represented the straights of Gibraltar, which was the entrance from Spain to the New World. The Spanish Motto on the coins "Plus Ultra" meant all beyond the straights belonged to Spain. This coin was made in a screw press that pressed down one coin at a time and took four men to turn the mechanism. The Certificate of Authenticity has a depiction of the screw press in action.
