A prevailing wind from the Pacific North West was gathering momentum and looking to sweep out the old and usher in the new. Blues based hard rock, despite its massive popularity with fans of Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top was very much being positioned as a dated commodity. For Tangier, although the future may have looked bright at the point they were signed, unfortunately, as with so many others of their ilk, the timing of their launch was, on reflection, badly misjudged. Originally formed in Philadelphia in 1984, the band were very much a muscular five piece, unashamedly rooted in the grand tradition of early 70s British blues rock, with influences that included Led Zeppelin, Free and Bad Company. Vocalist Bill Mattson’s voice was cut from the same cloth as masters of the craft such as Paul Rodgers, David Coverdale and Frankie Miller. The sparkling production, courtesy of English studio wizard Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, Free) provided a perfect backdrop for the creation of some of the most captivating melodic hard rock this side of a Cinderella album. Indeed, it was Cinderella’s front man Tom Keifer who originally referred the band to ATCO, the recently reactivated Atlantic Records sister label, identifying them as one of the finest unsigned outfits operating on the East Coast.
