Description: This eminently readable trilogy—a 2,968-page, 1.2 million-word history, according to Wikipedia—represents a terrific and detailed narrative of the military and, to a lesser extent, the political history of the American Civil War. Shelby Foote considered himself primarily a novelist, and while these books are NOT a fictionalized account, Foote brings the novelist's approach and storytelling power to this great epic. Many know Foote for his prominent role as a commentator on Ken Burns's PBS series about the Civil War. These three books, however, are his primary legacy. His southern sympathies are apparent: the first volume opens by introducing Confederate President Jefferson Davis, rather than Abraham Lincoln. He has said he would have served in the Confederate Army given his choice, but fighting for Southern Independence rather than the 'peculiar institution' of slavery. The books are in fine condition. I'm guessing they are not precisely a set, in that the second volume is obviously printed on a different paper stock, lighter in color. See pics. The books are in very good condition—solid binding with zero internal markings, writing or highlighting that I have found. They do show signs of having been read and handled—light soiling and corner curling, but are otherwise excellent.
