A scarce copy of Karl Merz's textbook on harmony and musical composition. Karl Merz (1834-1890) was an German-born American composer, educator, author, and editor. In 1861, he became a professor of music at Oxford Female College in Oxford, Ohio. He became the editor of Brainard's Musical World in 1868, a position he would hold until his death. In 1882, he relocated to Wooster, Ohio and founded and organized the Musical Department at the University of Wooster (Ohio). Over the course of his career he composed a vast number of musical pieces, including operettas, sacred pieces, choruses, songs, piano solos, waltzes, and dances.
