Description: The Road to CalvaryAlexey TolstoyTranslated by R.S. TownsendBoni & Liveright | New York | 1923pp. 451 | First Edition Thus Very Good condition hardcover with textured blue cloth boards and pictorial paper labels to front and spine. Spine lightly cocked with minor wear to extremities, though cloth shows no tears, and surfaces are remarkably clean with no scuffs or stains. Spine somewhat faded with minor deterioration to paper label. Label is still fully legible, however, and front shows minimal fading with bright colors and clear detail. Hinges show some limpness with beginnings of a split to rear, but boards remain sound and strong with firm binding throughout. Pages are toned with owner's signature to flyleaf and remnants of former seller's marks to rear, but surfaces remain pristine otherwise with no further writing, stains, dog-ears, or tears. Exceptionally scarce early American edition from Boni & Liveright, published over two decades before Tolstoy would finally finish the work and it would see its first American release in 1946.
