Description: In the 1700's, the expression "to fox" meant to spoil, or make sour. Used in this context, it was a warning not to drink too much. "Beware of the Fox" - don't drink too much ! This tankard was based on an example excavated in Yorktown, VA at the 18th century home of merchant John Bates. Item was hand made by local artisans in the 1970's for Williamsburg and Yorktown and is hard to find. It measures 5 1/4" tall 4 3/4" wide from rim to handle. No cracks or chips. There is a circular maker's mark on the bottom marked WCP. Thanks for looking and check out my other items too !
