Description: Up for sale is a Vintage Fiesta Ware Homer Laughlin or Homer Laughlin "like" Original Blue Color Bread & Butter 6 1/4” Plate Theatre Give away dishes. We are not sure of the brand of the dishes, we are using what other listings have provided. Each plate being sold in this listing has one or two small chips on the bottom of the plates- see photo as representative. There is a separate listing where 3 plates have no issues. My grandmother collected these dishes and told the story of obtaining them via movie theatres post-Depression. What follows is the info we found in researching the plates. They are cool to look at it but she was always afraid they had lead in the paint. Feel free to provide any info that would help us learn more info about these plates. Below is what we found: "Movie attendance plummeted during the Hard Times of the 1930s. Savvy marketers at Salem China and other potteries sold theater managers on the idea of giving away free dishes to women to attract viewers. “Dish Night” promotions were wildly successful. Salem sold train cars full of their now-famous Tricorne pattern to theaters. “Free to each lady” offers brought colorful dinnerware into Depression era homes, controversy to the movie business, and even riots when too many gravy boats appeared." Another source provided the following information: "During the depression era, money was extremely tight. Movie theaters lowered prices to as low as a dime, but it wasn’t until they introduced dish night that started bringing in full houses. Many of the dish and china companies were going out of business but many of the survived because of this promotion. The give-a-way was mostly to women and each week it was a different piece. The promotion ran through the 40’s and even the 50’s. There were many patterns offered by the various theaters across the county." Please see photos and email with any questions.
