Description: Vintage London-made (Box) New York-made (Flask) Thermos Brand Automobile Or Picnic Or Outing Lunch Kit. Thermos (the American Thermos Bottle Company) opened its first plant in Brooklyn, New York, in 1907. By 1912, demand had exceeded production capacity and a new factory in Norwich, Connecticut, started making bottles in 1913. The nickel-plated brass bottle with glass liner enclosed in the case dates from somewhere between 1910 (the latest patent year stamped on the flask shell) and 1913 (factory relocation). A nickel- or tin-plated sandwich/condiment box fits into the case next to the flask. The pressed paper and leather case itself is marked “London-Made” (see photos). Condition of all components as in photos. The bottle appears lightly used based on the excellent condition of the Plaster of Paris gasket. The tin box will need cleaning but shows no significant pitting or corrosion. The outer paperboard box will need new leather straps and buckles if it is to be closed securely for picnicking.
