Description: This is a vintage pair of pictures that measure approximately 15 ¾” x 11 ¾”. Each of the printed images, under glass and matted, measure approximately 8 ¾” x 6 ¾”. The matching wooden frames feature a pretty embossed floral motif with heavy gold gilding. Both pictures are very similar in looks, but the images were created by different artists. The first picture, by Howard S. Hewlett, is titled, “Twixt Love and Duty”, and features hunting dogs. The artist’s signature is located in the lower left-hand corner, the title is centered at the bottom, and a “C” (the remainder of this mark is covered by the matting) is located on the lower right-hand corner. The second picture, by Adelaide Hiebel, is titled, “When My Ship Comes In”, and features a little boy and girl with a toy sailboat and a puppy dog. The artist’s signature is located in the lower right-hand corner, the title is centered at the bottom, and the publisher’s mark, “Copyright The A. Corp., Joliet, ILL U.S.A” is situated in the lower left-hand corner. An old “Frank L. Kidd” label is affixed to the back of this picture. Both pictures feature images that appear to date from the early-mid 20th century period. Due to the fragility and the difficulty of replacing the backing, I did not uncover the type of prints these are. During this time period, calendar pages were often framed and used in pictures. This may be the case with these two pictures or they may be a different type of medium. Either way they are lovely prints from the past. Both framed pictures are in good vintage condition, but the Adelaide Hiebel piece is in the best state. Despite the following flaws, this is a handsome pair of matching pictures that have been relatively well-preserved. “Twixt Love and Duty” shows slight discoloration on the matting; a chip on the interior of the glass (near the top); the position of the print appears to have moved slightly; there are a couple chips/cracking on the frame; some wear and discoloration to the gold gilding; and wear and damage to the backing which is a little loose. “When My Ship Comes In” shows slight discoloration and some dirt residue on the matting; wear/cracking on the frame; wear and discoloration to the gold gilding and wear to the backing. Artist Information: Howard S. Hewlett (1893-1962) lived and worked in Illinois. He is known for calendar designs, genre paintings and etchings. In 1921, he worked as a commercial artist for the Joliet Carton Company. Most notable, he worked on the design of the little girl eating a slice of bread that eventually appeared on the Sunbeam Bread wrapper. Adelaide Hiebel (1885-1965) “was an artist and illustrator who worked for the Gerlach Barklow Co. in Joliet, Illinois, a manufacturer of art calendars. Hiebel preferred to work in pastels, and was known for her photographic detail and portraits of women, especially women and dogs, mothers and infants, infant portraits and small children in cute situations”.
