Description: William Spratling (1900-1967) was a silver designer, an artist, andbusinessman best known for discovering, teaching, and employing severalnotable Mexican Silversmiths via his Taxco workshop. Spratling designs were instrumental in pushing Mexican silver into a modernist 20th century. Spratling believedthat Mexican art was equal in quality and aesthetic to anything coming out of Europe and helped topopularize the silversmith craft with Hollywood and the literary class. He began employing artisans in the1930s, at its peak around 500 which produced luxury goods that were exported tothe United States.
