The museum I purchased this item from called it a Fireman helmet. Leather liner is pliable, no breaks or cracks, but could probably use a bit of saddle soap so it stays nice for years to come. A local Military museum liquidated their massive collection of antique military and surplus items. I was able to purchase a few of these rare items to bring to you here on ebay.
