Description: approx 100 years old Pencil Signed Etching on Paper by Artist Henri Jean Pontoy (1888-1968). There are some condition issues. Matted art measures approximately 20 inches x 16 1/2 and print inside mat opening measures approximately 13 3/4 inches x 10 1/2 inches. The mat is very discolored from aging and buyer may wish to replace. This piece is a fantastic example of Pontoy's work as he focused on North Africa and here is a market scene from beneath some protective covering looking out. The scene includes architectural details of the buildings and the mass of people who are attending the market in traditional dress. The scene captures a snapshot in time for a scene that still occurs today. The etching on heavy paper itself has waves most likely caused by storage and environmental moisture changes. Buyer or a professional framer may be able to improve this by carefully putting even weight on the paper in a flat location over a period of time. The best view of the waves on the paper is on the backside of the paper. (see photos). The etching appears a bit sepia toned with black and the heavy paper (despite the waves)is still in good condition particularly give the age of the item. Henri Pontoy's paintings have sold in the thousands of dollars. Condition is "pre-owned". This item will be carefully wrapped for shipping. No returns or refunds. .
