It is known as zougan in Japanese; has developed its own subset of terms to describe particular patterns. Shippou-zougan is a technique that enamells the pieces and is a departure from damascening. Pieces are known to be more than 1500 years old. The Greeks attributed its invention to Glaucus of Chios.
